Seldo's Journal of Barovia, Entry One

Journal Entry of Doomguard Seldoforyama
5th Day of Leaffall, 1491 DR
Barovia Village, Barovia

We have finished with the cleansing of a horrid abode known only to the locals as “the Death House”.  A den of black debauchery, murder, and other crimes so foul that I shudder to think on them.  I was able to bless and sanctify the bones of the family that lived within, as well as others I believe were their servants; but my heart is still disturbed by all we witnessed inside those walls.  What manner of man leaves their children to die even as he prays boons from the vampire abomination that rules this land?  What mother would place her babes in the arms of such a vile man?  Would that I had the answers; but I can only pray that the children are now at peace and their parents are suffering whatever hell is reserved for such wicked souls.
My comrades dealt with the evils of this house in the manner of the heroes we hear of in story and song.  Blade, spell, wit and strength were used in equal measure to cleanse that place as well as destroy the vile undead and other dangers we faced.  Without thought of their own well-being they placed themselves in harms’ way for each other and in the service of what is good and wholesome in the world; may Kelemvor look favorably upon them when they make their journey to his halls.
Now we must turn our attention to our true purpose here: the destruction of an ancient vampire prince the locals call “the Devil Strahd”.  I believe that he has become so powerful that he can influence this entire land by his curse and corruption; thus the dead walk, the wilds are overwhelmed with wolves and bats, and the people are so deadened to it that they turn a blind eye to others’ sufferings.  I can only hope that we are able to succeed in our quest, even if it means death.  I am willing to make that sacrifice if it will destroy this beast and free Barovia from his curse.  His destruction is also our only way back to the Sword Coast and home should we survive.
I will write further entries as I am able to do so.
